Born May 12 (25), 1908, in Smolensk. Soviet ophthalmologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1971). Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1968) and Hero of Socialist Labor (1960). Puchkovskaia graduated from the Kiev Medical Institute in 1930. In 1956 she became director of the V. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy.

Her principal works deal with cornea transplants, the surgical treatment of and immunotherapy for the sequelae of severe eye burns, the use of laser radiation in ophthalmology, and the organization of ophthalmological services for the public. She became editor in chief of Oftal’mologicheskii zhurnal (Journal of Ophthalmology) in Puchkovskaia is an honorary member of the International Society of Eye Surgeons and a Bulgarian society of ophthalmologists and is a corresponding member of a society of opthalmologists in the German Democratic Republic. She was a deputy to the sixth through eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR and a deputy chairman at the seventh and eighth convocations. In 1961 she received the V. Filatov Prize of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Puchkovskaia has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three other orders, and several medals.

A city (until 1955, a settlement), the administrative center of Kotel’nikovo Raion, Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR. A railroad station on the Volgograd-Sal’sk line, 190 km southwest of Volgograd.
